PRELIMINARY NOTE BY DR. LEA.This list, apart from its intrinsic interest, is a sample of the method adopted in the investigation. A careful index is being compiled by Mr. Bond of all words and phrases which seem likely to have been constructed or selected to convey meanings apart from their ordinary literary sense.
Coincidences purely accidental must necessarily occur, and something like three per cent. of all words and phrases will be multiples of Thirty-seven by the mere operation of the doctrine of Chance.
But when a large collection exhibits peculiarities for which the doctrine of Chance cannot wholly account, then other causes must be looked for and will probably be discovered. This method has been successfully applied in other branches of science, and, though very slow, is extremely effective.
